Martyrs of Galatasaray
When you enter Galatasaray High School today, you are going to be first welcomed by the love of Galatasaray and our homeland Turkey.
Entering the high school, you are going to first encounter a marble hall. Right across the door, there is a modest but proud monument that lists the martyrs of Galatasaray High School.
Most of them ran to the fronts as volunteers when they were just students and died as martyrs for their Turkish homeland. They lost their lives as young men but they are never going to be forgotten for ages.
May God bless their soul. Here are their names:
1- Ahmet Muhtar Bey, school number 783. One of the 1895 alumni, he later joined the army. He was martyred on 31 March 1908. The street he was martyred is named after him in Taksim.
2- İdris Bey, he was martyred in Tripolitania War in 1911. He volunteered to join the war as a student.
3- Fuad Bey, he was martyred in Balkan Wars in 1912. He volunteered to join the war as a student.
4- Arif İsmail Bey, he was the son of a wealthy farmer, he was martyred in Balkan Wars fighting against Bulgarians.
5- Ahmet Refik Bey, school number 119, one of the 1911 alumni; son of translator Mehmet Ata Bey. Big brother of Galib Ataç, MD and famous author Nurullah Ataç. He was martyred in Gallipoli in 1914 as a reserve officer.
6- Cahid Bey, school number 206, one of the 1913 alumni, he was martyred in the Great War as a reserve officer.
7- Cemil Bey, school number 64, one of the 1913 alumni, he was martyred in the Great War as a reserve officer.
8- Halid Fuat Bey, school number 134; son of state advisor Deli Fuat Pasha, volunteered to join Balkan Wars in 1911. He later remained at service and was martyred in Gallipoli. He was the fourth martyr son of Fuat Pasha.
9- Muzaffer Bey, left the school as a senior student and volunteered to join the Great War.
10- Vecdi Bey, left the school as a senior student and volunteered to join Balkan Wars. Later he continued to serve in the army and was martyred in Gallipoli.
11- Hasnun Galib Bey, son of governor Galib Paşa. One of the best footballers of Galatasaray Spor Kulübü, he volunteered to join the Great War and was martyred in 1915. The street of our club building is named after him to rejoice his memory.
12- Mehmet Ali Bey, son of Kadıköylü Enver Pasha. He volunteered to join Balkan Wars and the Great War. He was martyred in 1915.
13- Aziz Ulvi Bey, son of poet Ali Ulvi Bey. He left the school as a senior student in 1915 to join the ranks and was martyred in 1915 during the Great War.
14- Agop Elmasyan, he was an army physician in Gallipoli. He was martyred under heavy fire trying to heal injured soldiers.
15- İbrahim Orhan Bey, school number 794, one of the 1912 alumni; son of Sadık Bey, MD. One of the grandsons of Sadullah Pasha. He volunteered to be an air officer, he was injured twice in Gallipoli. He was martyred on air in 1916. First martyr pilot of the country’s history.
16-Said Fuad Bey, he volunteered to join the Great War as a senior student of our high school. He was one of the first scouts of our school. He was known as Keşşaf Said (Scout Said).
17- Neş'et Bey, school number 434, son of Bandırmalı Tevfik Pasha. He volunteered to join the Great War as a senior student of our high school.
18- Mehmet Refik Bey, he volunteered to join the Great War. He was martyred in Caucasus campaign in 1914.
19- Cevad Bey, school number 317, one of the 1912 alumni. He was martyred as a reserve officer during the Great War in Caucasus campaign in 1916.
20- Halet Bey, joined Balkan Wars as a volunteer while he was a student. He stayed in the army after it and also served in the Great War. He was martyred in Sinai Front as a commander alongside his classmate Memduh Bey in 1916.
21-Memduh Bey, school number 669, Halet Bey’s classmate, he was martyred in Sinai Front as a reserve officer with his school friend.
22- Hasib Bey, school number 13, one of the 1913 alumni. He left his agriculture education in Germany to join the Great War and he was martyred in Caucasus campaign.
23- Celal İbrahim Bey, school number 6, one of the 1914 alumni. One of the famous footballers of Galatasaray. He was martyred in the Great War as a reserve officer in 1917 while serving in Iraq.
24- Ahmed Hamdi Bey, school number 117, he volunteered to join the army in the Great War. He was martyred in Gazza in 1917.
25- Mehmed Ali Bey, school number unknown, he volunteered to join the army during the Great War. He was martyred in Sinai in 1917.
26- Sadi Bey, transferred from our school to Turkish Military Academy. He became a commissioned officer. He was martyred in 1921 during Battle of Sakarya.
27- Fatin Bey, school number 1073, one of the 1920 alumni, had a degree in military medicine. He was martyred viciously by rebels in 1932 as an army physician. His memory is as noble as Menemen’s Kubilay and his sacrifice is worth a monument in Ağrı or Karaköse.
